In 886, Alfred the Great repulsed London from the Vikings and concluded a peace treaty with the leader of the East Anglia Gutrum Dumas, in accordance with which the independence of both states was recognized and the western boundary of the Danish possessions was established. This treaty laid the foundation for the existence of Danelag as a special state entity in England, which was governed by its own laws based on Danish, Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon rights. Many features of the legal system, as well as some specific features of the social structure of Danelag existed until the late Middle Ages, and some even entered into general English practice.
